I have a dream

There is no better day to talk about our dreams than on the day we celebrate the man known for his “I have a dream” speech. Today we pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate the life and achievements of one of our nations greatest American civil rights leader and influencer.

Below are 4 tips on how to turn your dreams into attainable goals:

1. Write out your dreams.

There’s something about writing things down that makes you think it’s that much more real. Write down the dreams you have for this year or for your life. That’s the simple first step of turning your dreams into an attainable goal.

2. Prioritize your dreams.

In the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, it’s often brought up that people should begin with the end in mind. It’s important to prioritize the dreams you put down on paper and understand which dream has priority or is highest on the list. This allows you to create a strategic plan for turning this dream into a reality.

3. Milestones and monitoring progress.

When you have your dreams now prioritized, action needs to be taken for it to become a goal. A goal always has an end date and that’s the exciting part about it. Before focusing on the end date, create small incremental steps to achieve that goal and monitor your progress.  Often if we have a deadline we don’t know how to get there, so within this prioritized dream, set small attainable goals that in the long run will get you to the end date (and a dream come true, yay!).

4. Enlist vision and seek support.

The easiest part has already been done, you’ve taken the time to write down your dreams, prioritize them, create small goals to achieve your big dream. Now what’s next you may be asking? It’s time to accomplish these small goals and finally have your dream come true! But it’s all easier said than done. Before reaching that success, you’ll have to visualize your dreams coming true and it might be helpful to share with someone close to you for support and that good old pep talk for when you want to give up. I must admit I am not one to share my dreams with others, but I do present them to God as I believe all my dreams have been placed in my heart by Him.  In Psalm 37:4 NIV, God gives us this promise: “Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” It’s important that we have someone to fall to when we want to give up on our dreams.

You now have 4 steps on how to transform your dreams into attainable goals! Whatever challenge you may find along the way, don’t give up, remember where you started and that you are one step closer to that dream come true.

Dream Big,

-V
